Summer In The Trenches

Summer.
Hot and humid.
Sticky sweat dripping down your forehead in beads, glistening in the harsh afternoon sunlight, reminding you just how miserably thirsty you are every time you taste the salt collecting on your lips.

Summer.
Rainy or dry?
Morning dawns another promise of cooling the air, only to be left with one more thunderstorm rolling across the prairie, leaving the rivers swollen with too many days of overactive weather, filling the farmers' crops with more acres of a washout than ample bushels of grain.
The local coffee shop buzzes with complaints of flooded basements and unpassable dirt roads from trenches cutting deeper and deeper, making everyone wonder if a drought would be welcome soon.

Summer.
Lazy and crazy.
Every teacher's hard work and effort takes a tumble into the barren lands of fuzzy memory loss.
Every schoolboy and girls' favorite time of year, no homework drudgery, no cranky teacher adding one more assignment to the list for the weekend, no clanging bells to ring in the noisy march to another roomful of fellow classmates who dread the next boring lecture. The break from schedules makes next year's lessons seem far away.

On the other hand,
Summer can pack many varied delights.

The town's favorite ice cream shop re-opens,
bringing sweet, cool delights to young and old.
Swimming pools and ponds, rivers and lakes,
brimming with laughter and bursting with life,
as crowds from far and wide seek refreshment and relaxation in many forms.
Travelers seem to come out of nowhere,
some slowly enjoying the trek into tourist mode,
savoring every unexpected sight around,
while others appear to be in a hurry to get everywhere fast.
Parties with outdoor activity are much more relaxed than the usual black tie events,
making even the most solemn of ceremonies a trifle less nerve-wracking.
Then there's the little things that most adults seem to forget.
Who can deny, the charm of a sultry summer night
when "a zillion" lightning bugs twinkle their private dance for all to enjoy?

Summer.
Whether you spend a summer sloshing in the rain-drenched lands of abundant liquid clouds,
or reveling in the enchanted lands of family fun on sandy beaches,
or perhaps for you, it's just another workday and bills are piling high,
one thing is always the same.

We are all in the trenches of life.
There will always be ups and downs.
Enjoy today's smiles and laughter, tomorrow may bring illness and pain.
If the horizon looms dark for you, don't keep looking at it in despair.
It's bound to have a rainbow someday.
If the storm clouds seem to follow you at every turn,
even in the trenches there is safety.
Some of us may have to wait longer than others,
but there will come a day when all will be made right.
The best summer you ever had
will be dull in comparison to forever!

Comradery and strength are built in the trenches,
so carry on soldier,
we can do this together!!
